Hockney, David
David Hockney was born in Bradford in Yorkshire, in North England on 9 July 1937. He attended Bradford Grammar School from 1948, and in 1953 attended Bradford School of Art. In 1959 he enrolled at the Royal College of Art in London from where he graduated in 1962.Hockney's talent was recognised early on by some skilled art connoisseurs. As early as 1961, two Hockney etchings were bought by the Museum of Modern Art New York, and the London dealer John Kasmin bought all the works that Hockney produced in his final year at the Royal College and gives Hockney a contract.1963. Hockney publishes his celebrated Rake's Progress etchings with Editions Alecto. He travels to New York,where he meets Andy Warhol.1964. Hockney moves to Los Angeles1965. He takes a teaching post at Boulder Collorado1966. Hockney spends three weeks in Beirut, and produces drawings for his series of etchings 'Illustrations for Fourteen Poems from C.P. Cavafy. In the Summer he takes a teaching post at UCLA where he meets Peter Schlesinger.1967. Teaching at University of California, then returns to London and travels in Europe.1968. Travels in USA. Exhibits at Documenta IV at Kassel.Over the next years Hockney travelled widely in America, Europe and Asia. In 1970 an important retrospective opened at the Whitechapel Gallery in London and toured in Europe. In 1974 he had his first major show in Paris at the Musee des Arts decoratifs. Between 1977 and 1980 Hockney worked on various Stage designs, including for Glyndebourne and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In 1982 he bought a house in Hollywoodwhere he began extensive work with photocollages, returning to painting again in 1984. He has contued to paint actively and work on stage designs. In 1988 there was a further major retrospective in Los Angeles, New York and London. An important retrospective of his drawings took place in 1996.
