A pupil of his father Johann Jakob Dorner the elder. Johann Jakob the younger became one of the leading munich landscape painters. He travelled in Bavaria, Austria, Switzerland and France, and became a member of the Academies of Berlin, Munich and Vienna. Paintings and watercolours by Dorner are held in the Museums of Munich.
